Peter Xu is inspired by velvet, purity and authenticity. He is 26, lives in Shanghai and blogs about fashion. Music is his life, and he is drawn to everything mysterious. Whenever he goes to a fashion week overseas, he wears something Chinese so people can see the journey he has taken.
Peter took us for the M Magazine interview on a tour of Shanghai, and showed us the city where he has lived for the last five or so years. We visited a range of locations, including the Shanghai Bund and the Waibaidu Bridge, the first all-steel bridge in the world.
MCM: Describe your style
Peter: I’m influenced by street style and hip-hop music, and attitude is a must. I carry statement pieces, and I’m pretty into accessories such as bags, caps, clutches and sunglasses. But for me, colour comes first, and I dye my hair once or twice a month to keep my look fresh.
MCM: Who’s your style icon?
Peter: I really like Kanye West, Anna Piaggi and David Gandy, all in different ways. I think you should have influences, but you should only ever buy what you genuinely like. Be bold, follow your instincts, and you could come across a style that will last forever.
MCM: What’s the most essential item in your backpack?
Peter: Music is my life, so I need my iPod and my Jambox. For this shoot, I chose an MCM backpack that reminds me a bit of electronic and a bit of grunge ? somewhere between the Orb and Nirvana.
MCM: Do you remember your first backpack?
Peter: No. I’m so energetic and carry lots of stuff, so it probably didn’t last long. MCM backpacks are spacious and they last forever, so it’s like they were designed for me.
MCM: What do you do in your downtime?
Peter: I tweet a lot and I love to travel to fashion shows and trendy places. When I go to fashion weeks, I always wear something Chinese because I want people to see the culture I represent.
MCM: What inspired your choice of location?
Peter: I’ve been in Shanghai for more than five years, and I wanted to pick locations that truly reflect the city and the new generation that lives here.
