MCM Scarf Project - Introducing Xu Hualing

05-06-2014

As you know, here at MCM we love to support the art world as much as we can and we have a long standing tradition of patronage. For this very special collection of scarves, we asked artists Gao Yu, Hang Chunhun, Huang Ying, Liu Kun and Xu Hualing to explore the origins of some traditional Chinese cultural heritages including Longquan celadon, Anhui Xuan paper, shadow play, woodblock printing and Nanjing brocade.

To create their scarves, the five artists visited the birthplaces of each artistic heritage and later mixed it with contemporary lifestyles and traditions. The result: five different interpretations of traditional folk culture with one thing in common - a certain youthfulness. This is the spirit of MCM today, perfect balance between tradition and contemporary lifestyle.

Last week, you met Liu Kun, and so today, I would like to introduce you to Xu Hualing whose bright tangerine coloured scarf makes use of the Nanjing Brocade technique. The inspiration behind this scarf comes from Xu Hualing's interpretation of a densely stitched image of a peacock she saw on the back of a piece of brocade during her exploration of the art form. She later recreated the scene in the scarf she designed, further emphasising the beauty of Chinese crafts by sketching around them with brush pens.

Born in Heilongjiang Province in 1975 and graduated from Central Academy of Fine Arts. Xu Hualing lives in Beijing, taught at Beijing university of technology institute of art and design, in 2012, transferred to the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) institute traditional Chinese painting teaching.

Xu Hualing used traditional Nanjing Brocade technique to create the beautiful pattern you can see on the scarf.Produced with millions of woven wires, Nanjing Brocade is renowned for its complicated manufacturing process and exquisite hand-embroidery skills.

Nanjing brocade, also known as Nanjing Yunjin is a kind of brocade made in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China. “Yunjin” is a general term for the traditional jacquard silk fabric. It can be traced back to the officially-run weaving factory “Jin Bureau”, which produced the brocade only for the royal family. It was not until the late Qing dynasty that the development of Nanjing cloud-pattern brocade entered its period of full bloom; then the products were sold to the common citizens. Nanjing brocades are famous for their exquisite technology, elegant patterns and smooth texture. The patterns is various and as beautiful as the cloud in the sky; therefore its name “Yunjin” comes. In 2009, Nanjing brocade was been selected into candidate programmes of the oral and intangible heritage of humans at UNESCO.
