The Art Of The Backpack

The Art of the Backpack

The Orient Express travelled from Paris to Istanbul carrying kings and courtesans, aristocrats and spies. In small villages the children would hear the train and race towards the tracks. The fast ones saw the silk sheets and the gentlemen puffing fat cigars. In moments the train would pass, leaving behind a longing for adventure that would last forever.

Next there would be flight, and a journey to the moon, but travel was still very elusive in the 1970s, when MCM’s story began. Inspired by their forefathers, a globetrotting elite emerged, travelling new continents freely for business and pleasure. They were at the dawn of a new age, but the baggage they carried was still as heavy and unsightly as before.

1970s culture developed around a passion for creativity and ideas that was to continue to drive the vibrancy of German art for decades. Influences from New German Cinema and photography emphasised the creative, bohemian subculture of the time, and went on to inspire fashion and style. The origins of dance and Hausmusik on the club circuit continue to influence a global artistic movement today. Centuries of creativity and idealism rose from the coffee shops of Munich’s Kunstareal, and can still be seen in the hand stitching, the individual riveting, and every impression of those iconic three letters.

The ‘70s elite instantly adored MCM, and the name quickly became established on the fashion scene. Tastes were continuing to unstiffen, and early MCM backpacks had a classic, functional style that freed the nomads to cross cities, climb mountains and travel thousands of miles.

German manufacturing has been recognised for its sophistication and quality since the 3rd century. The same values can still be seen in the care, attention and love that go into every detail of an MCM design. Fashions have moved on, but the workmanship and construction have stayed true to the hallmarks of German craftsmanship throughout the ages.

Today, MCM is in over two hundred destinations around the world, including New York, Milan, London, and, of course, Munich. Flagship stores sit in the shrub-lined avenues and expansive window displays of the world’s most exclusive shopping districts.

Styles have shifted from the classic, functional looks of early backpacks to the fractured textures and minimal details of today. Through it all, MCM’s renowned quality, style and construction has remained just as constant as man’s enduring thirst for adventure.
