I don't know about you, dear readers, but I LOVE to see how things are made. Through my job I got to visit many factories and ateliers making clothes, bags, shoes (I even got to make my own pair of shoes from scratch once). As a photographer myself, I also like to see how other photographers work, so today's feature is a real treat for me and it will also be one for you. In case you haven't guessed, but you probably have, you clever lot, today I am taking you behind the scenes of our AW14 catalogue to see the making of Jenny Van Sommers incredible images.
Jenny van Sommers is a London-based, Australian Still Life photographer. She has contributed to magazines like Another Magazine, Nowness, Ten as well as English, French and Italian Vogue.
By now, you are already familiar with our Digital Soldiers campaign, starring a strong singular figure inhabiting a serendipitously glitched landscape. Taking a cue from Nam June Paik, the campaign is inspired by the vision of a post-gender digital future and our increasing inhabitation of the online space.
And what better way to evoke the season's concept than using glitch art in the images to show how the virtual fuses with the organic, and how we use technology to create art (and how technology subsequently becomes art).
Glitch art concept samples & inspirations behind the collection and campaign's signature aesthetics
Glitch art is the aestheticisation of digital or analog errors, such as artifacts and other "bugs", by either corrupting digital code/data or by physically manipulating electronic devices.
Working in a studio means setting up the perfect lighting and paying great attention to detail when it comes to styling.
Here you see the still life set up with the lighting kit and set of mirrors - then the finished shot as seen in the catalogue.
Waiting its turn...
Again you can see the mirrors that the photographer played with to create the glitches effect and the final image on the right.
Have a look below for some more examples from our catalogue...
And finally, a beautiful campaign image.
