MCM Scarf Project - Introducing Liu Kun

28-05-2014

As you know, here at MCM we love to support the art world as much as we can and we have a long standing tradition of patronage. For this very special collection of scarves, we asked artists Gao Yu, Hang Chunhun, Huang Ying, Liu Kun and Xu Hualing to explore the origins of some traditional Chinese cultural heritages including Longquan celadon, Anhui Xuan paper, shadow play, woodblock printing and Nanjing brocade.

To create their scarves, the five artists visited the birthplaces of each artistic heritage and later mixed it with contemporary lifestyles and traditions. The result: five different interpretations of traditional folk culture with one thing in common - a certain youthfulness. This is the spirit of MCM today, perfect balance between tradition and contemporary lifestyle.

Today, I would like to introduce you to Liu Kun, whose beautiful jade coloured scarf uses the ancestral woodblock printing technique. Symbolizing good luck and peace, artist Liu Kun ingeniously chose “lucky clouds” patterns over ancient woodblock printed characters, for the design of his scarf. Retaining elements of traditional Chinese characters, the translated words of MCM are also printed on the scarf, connecting the Munich spirit and Chinese culture in a unique way.

liukun

Liu Kun, alias Haoyuan or hedong, that was born in 1967. Now he is part of Weihai Artists Association, deputy secretary general of Weihai Young Artists Institute and Artists Association of Economic-Technical Development Zone of Weihai.

Held first personal exhibition in Harbin in 1995, over 80 artworks were on show. When he studied in Luxun Academy of Fine Arts, enlightening by famous artists Wang Yisheng and Wen Chongsheng that work as professors, Liu brought something new into his paintings.

His artwork ‘the ridge of mountain’ is a permanent collection of Jinshangjing History Museum; other two paintings ‘meeting the arrival of Spring’ and ‘awakening mountain’ respectively were collected by Japanese and Korean well-known enterprises.

Liu Kun used traditional woodblock printing techniques to create a pattern of lucky clouds all over the jade coloured silk scarf. Woodblock printing was developed in East Asia and is an antique method used to print text, images or patterns on textiles (and later on paper). The earliest examples of this technique used on cloth date to before 220. It remained the most common East Asian method of printing books, texts and images until the 19th century.

The "lucky clouds" motif used by Liu Kun features clouds which changing shapes evoke outstanding glamour. Their proximity to the sky tends to ignite people's imaginations. This is why clouds in Ancient China were regarded as a symbol of luck and promotion, as well as a creation of the Heaven. It is interesting to see this pattern on a scarf and how Liu Kun managed to weave many different ancient Chinese traditions in just one small square of silk - here you get to wear jade, woodblock printing and lucky clouds around your neck everyday. A true symbol of luxury.
